Stop Getting Hot over your Fridge
Peter offers free tool to help those refrigerators run cool
Online help for calculating wire sizes
CAMPER-turned businessman Peter Armstrong is offering DIY caravanners a free tool to help their fridges run cool.
The boss of Brisbane-based mobile RV service provider Tow Care, Mr Armstrong said the online aid was available at the click of the mouse for low voltage electrical installers.
“Caravan and camping fridges are notorious for running hot, and the biggest reason why is because their connecting electrical wires are underrated,” he explained.
For caravanners with a small amount of know-how, his new online tool provided the means for calculating how to overcome the problem.
“Fridges, TVs, water pumps and lighting all require power, which is usually delivered via low-voltage circuits from batteries and solar panels when the recreational vehicle is parked up for free camping,” Mr Armstrong said.
“These low voltage circuits often contain wiring that is too small, usually to save costs or through lack of technical expertise.
“Devices such as battery chargers, batteries, inverters and fridges are particularly sensitive to voltage drops experienced in long runs of underrated cable.
“They simply will not work efficiently, and that can affect the temperature of fridges.”
He said a battery-charging circuit, for example, could extend from the front of the tow vehicle to the back of the caravan, a distance of up to 10m or more.
“Choosing the wrong size cable could mean that your new battery will not charge correctly and could prematurely fail,” Mr Armstrong said.
He explained that the free Tow Care caravan wire size calculator for professional and DIY installers of caravan electrical equipment easily calculated the correct size wire to be used inside the RV.
“It is a free tool that could be used by anyone rewiring a caravan, camper trailer, horse trailer, mobile home or other type of recreational vehicle,” he added.
Mr Armstrong said he launched his family mobile caravan and trailer business after a “long love affair with caravans, campers and the outdoors”.
