weather. Unusual Sunset View. If you like Caravanning come up
If you like fantastic scenery, incredible sunsets, unbelievable magnificent wildlife view, millions of stars at night or just sitting around with good friends and having a yak, then Karumba and Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park in the Gulf of Carpentaria Queensland is the place to be.
Our boat for the morning
We headed out to sea, it was pleasant weather. The skipper had a fish finder and explained to me what he was looking for to try to find a shoal of Mackerel. The water here was about 3 metres deep, expert showed me when fish showed up in the fish finder, I think we should get one of these when we get back to Sydney!
Once we’d found a good spot, we anchored up and were each given a rod. The skipper preferred to put bait, pilchards, on the hooks for us, he said it stopped us getting slimy fish all over the rods, suits me!
I was the first to catch a Mackerel, which was super exciting, it was tricky to get in and expert helped me to reel it in and then picked it up in the net for me. It was a “keeper”, long, wow, the biggest fish I have ever caught, I was thrilled!
After a 12 hours some of the crew had caught Mackerel, perhaps another 3 or 4. The skipper had heard from the other charter boat that they had found a shoal of Blue Salmon and were catching them, so we pulled up the anchor and motored over to join them.
We motored in to what looked like a sandy patch of water, expert explained how that’s how they knew the salmon were there, they were bottom feeders so were stirring up all the sand in to the water. The sandy water would move as the Salmon worked their way along the bottom.
We caught 3 Blue Salmon pretty quickly, I caught one which I was thrilled about, another keeper, it was a good size too! I now had caught 2 fish.
We’d had an awesome morning, I really loved fishing, especially catching such huge fish.
The trip cost was equivalent to the fish caught which was the value of 12.8 days on a powered site at Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park That evening we sat in the Camp kitchen near to our powered site where we cooked the fish. It was delicious! I hope we get to go fishing again!
I call this place dreams come true land as i had heard many stories about wildlife, millions of stars gazing in sky, dramatic sunsets valley and last but not least endless fishing catch spots.
What we did enjoy seeing these beautiful huge birds which were just at the back of our caravan during our stay at Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park.
Wild Life in Karumba
In the afternoon we visited the Barramundi Discovery Centre, which is essentially a hatchery which breeds then releases young Barramundi in to the rivers and lakes in the area for recreational fishing.
We booked on to a guided tour, which was really rather busy, and learnt all about this particular breed of Barramundi, the Southern Gulf Strain.
They keep the adult fish for breeding in huge tanks which we could view from windows in the sides of the tank.
As part of the tour we were given the opportunity to feed a Barramundi by hand over the top of the tanks. They are huge fish, about 140cm and although they don’t have teeth, they snatch the fish from your hand and it makes you jump, and gets you a little wet!
