Story & photos shared by Fireman Ron & Di Sinclair Guests at Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park

Marty Conroy 113cm Barra April 2015On our journey up north towards the Gulf of Carpentaria, we kept hearing good things about the Sunset Caravan Park at Karumba Point. It’s amazing what you pick up from recommendations, and when you get numerous recommendations for the same park you can be pretty confident that they’ll be right on the money.

We booked ahead, as you have to do at the most popular parks in peak season, and managed to get a site at this fabulous location. Karumba Point is separated from Karumba by a tidal area and the two places are somewhat different. Out at the point you are just blown away by the location and views of the Gulf. There are views from the park itself, but it’s only a short walk over the road to the public reserve and you feel like you’re on a tropical island.

We were met at reception by Wendy and ‘Pecker”, two old friends of What’s Up Down Under. They got us settled in and introduced us to Brigitte, who has been one of the managers of the park for a few years. To say this park is popular would be a huge understatement. We spoke to some people who have been coming here for twenty years and more. And why do they come? Well, apart from the great location it’s mainly for the fishing. Barramundi and much, much more. But if, like us, you’re not a ‘fisherperson’ you can still eat the bounty of the sea here at Karumba Point and enjoy the hard work of those who want to throw out a line.

VideoThe Sunset Caravan Park has spacious sites, and as many of the regulars have boats on trailers, it’s a lucky thing that it’s a generous park. There were more ‘southern’ number plates on fourwheeldrives here than we’d seen in any other park so far on this trip. It’s a real mecca for southern fishermen and travellers who just love beautiful places.

In and around the Karumba area there are lots of tours and activities including the Barramundi Discovery Centre and a couple of charted boat and cruise companies. The local seafood shops and eateries offer some great tucker and it’s a real treat to be able to buy a freshly caught mudcrab and arrange to have it cooked at the local tavern for your enjoyment. The Karumba Point Tavern, by the way, is one of the bestlocated pubs I have ever encountered, and it’s only a short walk from the Sunset Caravan Park. How good is that?

This is a place you must visit if you’re planning to go to ‘gulf country’, but make sure you book your spot in peak season or you’ll be very disappointed. Read Full Story and See Photos Inside
