Karumba is a small outback town in the Gulf region of Northern Queensland at the mouth of the Norman River with a recreational fishing port that attracts thousands of fishing enthusiasts each year.

Here are three fun facts about Karumba you may not know…

FACT 1 – WILDLIFE OASIS

Karumba is a wildlife oasis home to kangaroos, lizards, crocodiles and birdlife. The Gulf area is home to numerous species of birds, including migratory species – parrots, finches, honeyeater, herons, birds of prey, and brolgas. Experts have reported over 50 different species of birds. If you love birds, Karumba is a birdwatchers paradise.

FACT 2 – INSPIRATION FOR A SONG

Karumba has some great little restaurants and bars that offer something unique to its visitors. When American singer, songwriter and lead vocalist of the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers Anthony Kiedis visited Karumba, he was so inspired with the small outback town he produced a song called ‘Animal Bar’, named after the Animal Pub in Karumba. Kiedis said the song was about the cycle of life.

FACT 3 – KARUMBA CHANGED ITS NAME

According to Carpentaria Shire, Karumba was once named Kimberley. However this created some confusion with Kimberley in the Northern Territory, so the name was changed to Karumba which is believed to be an an aboriginal word meaning ‘spirit of an old man‘.

THINGS TO DO IN KARUMBA – The Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre.

Discover the amazing secrets of the mighty barramundi at The Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre, the only hatchery in the world to breed the Southern Gulf strain of this iconic fish!

From humble beginnings with second hand, donated equipment the Centre was started by a group of professional fishermen who set out to restock the local waterways with fingerlings to ensure a sustainable fishing future for years to come. They became known as the Barramundi Restocking Association.
